Gilbert Berthold is a Zurich based architect with over 15 years of practical experience in Vienna, New York and Zurich. He draws on an international perspective and diverse building experience to inform his design process.
Prioritizing the interplay between space, program and context, each project is undertaken with the belief that architecture materializes tangible structures that engage in a meaningful dialogue with society and the environment.
Berthold’s work spans a range of scales from single family housing to public and cultural projects. Leveraging a broad skillset, he continuously seeks opportunities for creative engagement.
Prior to founding his architecture practice in 2023, he worked as an Associate at Karamuk Kuo where he led multiple projects including the Augusta Raurica Archaeological Center (recipient of the LafargeHolcim Award for Sustainable Construction, Prix Acier 2023 and Gutes Bauen 2023 BS BL) and the Weiden secondary school (recipient of the best architects 19 award).
He also teaches in the Bachelor of Architecture programme at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), with a focus on design and construction.
The first completed project of the practice, a single family house with a reed roof in Weiden am See, explores the potential of thatch as a contemporary building material. Conceived as both a family home and a demonstrative case study for modern reed construction, the project reinterprets a regional building tradition through a contemporary timber structure and a doubly curved roof geometry. The house has received several awards, including the Bauherr:innenpreis 2024, the Architecture Prize of the Province of Burgenland 2025, the Newcomer Prize in Houses of the Year 2025 and the recognition Best Architecture Austria 2025.
